In commemoration of the 75th Anniversary of Pearl Harbor, Bishop Museum is honored to display rarely seen images from its archives and other sources, as well as loaned items from expert collectors in Homefront Hawaii. This exhibit focuses on the dramatic effect on the citizens of Hawaii during and soon after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Did you know that there were dozens of civilian casualties on the island of Oahu on December 7, 1941? Today, residents and visitors drive by the sites of these tragedies without knowing their place in the larger story of this internationally significant event. See the stark effects of the war in photos of explosion-damaged Honolulu streets, a fortified Waikiki Beach armed with barbed wire, a bomb shelter at Iolani Palace, and even an actual part from a Japanese plane that was shot down. The exhibit opens on Thursday, December 1, 2016 in conjunction with commemoration ceremonies taking place across the island, and will be on display through March 2017. This exhibit is generously supported by the Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau.
